ROY WEST CENTRE REFEREE CHANGING ROOMS NAMED IN HONOUR OF FRANK BROUGHTON

We are delighted to announce that the Roy West Centre referee changing rooms have officially being renamed in honour of Frank Broughton.

Frank is renowned throughout East Riding for the dedication and time he has spent supporting match officials throughout the county, a journey that started back in 1959 after he had to retire from playing the game after suffering a serious knee injury whilst playing for Ideal Standard.

After refereeing his first game on Newbridge Road in Hull some 60 years ago Frank went on to become an FA Referee tutor and a national FA Futsal referee appointments officer. Franks is also credited with introducing a county wide referee mentoring scheme whilst also serving the game as an observer and assessor.

During this time Frank also became a prominent figure in the local East Riding Referees Association with him joining the management committee in 1967.

Unsurprisingly during this time Frank has picked up many awards which include the FA Order of MeritFA Long Service to Refereeing, Referee Instructor Long Service Award & FA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Spending time in his company you can’t help but be captivated by the pride he takes in supporting the grassroots game and many people throughout the county are blessed to be able to call him a friend. When asked about how he managed to put so much time and energy into the game his response typifies the man “You can never put more into the game than it gives you in return.”

From such esteemed match officials to young referees making their way in the game Frank can relate to them all, he loves helping people and it has helped him to be relatable to young people even in his advancing years. His sole purpose when assessing was to help the referee develop and refine the skills they possessed and he is credited with playing an important role in the development of many match officials who have gone on to work in the professional game.

East Riding FA CEO Adam Lowthorpe said; "We are delighted to be able to rename the Referee Changing Rooms at Roy West Centre in honour of Frank. This way when match officials take charge of finals, a highlight in their refereeing journey, there will be a permanent reminder of a man who has done so much to develop referees in the county. Frank’s response to this was overwhelming, he didn’t expect it but it is so richly deserved and it was a privilege to break the news to him."
