In a season which was unfortunately cut short as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The FA and McDonald's Grassroots Football Awards celebrate and recognise the inspiring work that has taken place throughout the 2019 / 2020 season. This is our opportunity to celebrate the East Riding's grassroots football heroes!

The FA and McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards are for people who make a positive difference. It’s our way to celebrate the fantastic individuals who put their heart and soul into the grassroots game across East Riding – and say a huge thank you to the incredible volunteers who inspire us all.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has seen people go to great lengths to support the communities in which they live which means these awards are more important then ever before. This years ceremony might not be in its traditional setting but that doesn't mean that the winners are any less worthy and If anything it highlights our determination to celebrate everything that is great about grassroots football in our county.

COTTINGHAM RANGERS AFC

Formed in 1972 the club currently boasts over 25 teams with close to 500 registered players. Cottingham Rangers are proud to boast a fully inclusive football offer which includes mini soccer, walking football and disability football.This includes a full male and female player pathway.

The club has recently became an official partner of the University of Hull also recently signed a record sponsorship deal with a renowned national frozen food retailer

The clubs vision is to become the most attractive football club in the District for players and their families and they want to known for their focus on player development, community, and high-quality resources.

DAVID LAWTY

David is a UEFA B qualified coach and the current Head Coach at East Riding Futsal Club, a club which plays in National Futsal League. Not only that David is also a registered referee and keen advocate of all things futsal.

Dave gives 110% to futsal spending hours each week on top of his day job to make his team and players better, his commitment to his training sessions and games and the promotion of futsal is second to none and the game has even impacted his family with his 14 and 15-year-old daughters recently becoming qualified futsal referees.

DENNIS DREWRY

Dennis is currently a level 5 match official and has been refereeing for almost half a century. Throughout his career in the game Dennis refereed in all the local leagues as well as school, college and University fixtures.

Not only does Dennis take to the field each weekend he has also helped with the development of new up and coming referees including Carl Boyeson of the Football League and Richard West of the Premier League.

Dennis not only commands respect from players with his performances, but also through his ability to communicate in a calm and controlled manner.

HULL AND DISTRICT YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Started back in 1958 after a bunch of parents thought there wasn’t enough football for children at the time the league has stood the test of time and continues to evolve with it currently providing football for nearly 7000 young people. Football luminaries such as Dean Windass, Nick Barmby and Paul Robinson have all started their careers in in the league as have a number of current Premier League and Football League match officials. 

Last season the league pioneered the innovative Smoke Free Sidelines campaign whislt this year they introduced a purple shirt campaign to try and reduce the amount of abuse young match officials receive.

This is the second year in a row the league has been crowned Grassroots Football League of the Year.

ADAM SHIMMIN
 
Aged just 20 years old Adam is already the current East Riding FA Youth Council Chairman, Level 4 Referee and a coach at the Tigers Trust. Adams enthusiasm and energy is infectious and his caring nature and desire to help others makes him a brilliant coach. Adam has also made a lasting impression on his peers, he is an advanced apprentice at the Tigers Trust acts as a positive role model to younger coaches at the Tigers Trust. Despite his age Adam is very mature and is always thoroughly professional in whatever role he undertakes.

CHARLIE AND SUE WALKER

Charlie and Sue have been a focal point at Hessle Sporting Club since its inception back in 1976 with both Charlie and Sue now retired teachers. Charlie is Club Chairman with the club amassing over 40 teams and close to 700 players.

Charlie and Sue were the instigators behind the recent opening of a brand-new club house which has helped put the club firmly at the heart of the community

When people talk about Charlie and Sue they say they are usually first on scene at the club house and last to leave. They cut the grass mark the pitches, make the tea and help look after teams at all age groups”

The club also hosts one of the biggest summer tournaments in the country with over 200 teams regularly attending and have recently started a new walking football section, all fo which happens because of Charlies and Sues dedication to the club.

NICK MINNS

Nick currently coaches Springhead Falcons and has been credited with bringing girls football back to Springhead FC after an absence of many years. Words used to describe Nick by the people who nominated him include; Inclusive, patient and encouraging

For Nick it does not matter the team wins or lose as long as they have enjoyed it and Nick prioritises letting the girls organise themselves whilst speaking to everyone is a positive manner whether that be his players, opponents or match officials.

During lock down Nick has been constantly in touch with his team, setting them new challenges and trying to keep them busy.

ALAN BROOKES

Alan currently maintains the pitches and equipment at Costello FC, a club he has been involved for many years. As well as maintaining the pitches and equipment Alan is also Vice Chairman at the Club and coaches one of the club’s mini soccer teams

When people talk about Alan they say:

"If games are not able to be played at a weekend because of the pitch Alan takes it personal and he is always the first person to notify managers if a game won’t be on so that they know he has tried everything possible”

"Alan is at the clubhouse daily, tidying up, sorting out the equipment, cutting the grass, line marking, doing odd jobs to ensure everything is ready for the weekend matches"

“Alan stands out because he is so unassuming and just quietly gets on with it and does what is necessary. He cares about the football and he wants the players to have the best surface to play this wonderful game on”

SANDS UNITED (HULL AND EAST RIDING)

SANDS United is a football club that was set up to support men who have been affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth. They currently support over 25 men through weekly football sessions with the club joining the Hull Floodlight Football League shortly before the outbreak of COVID-19.

SANDS United provide a vital support network and help support players with their emotional and mental wellbeing. They also raise funds to support families who have been affected by the loss of a baby.

When people talk about the club they say "This team has gone from strength to strength in such a short space of time and have overcome some of the most difficult challenges by using the power of football”

East Riding FA CEO Adam Lowthorpe said:

"Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges that has brought it was always our determination to press ahead with celebrating the areas Grassroots Football Heroes. Although we have a number of well deserving winners it is truly humbling not only to receive the amount of nominations we did but also to hear the incredible stories of dedication and effort.

The 2020 FA and McDonalds Grassroots Football Awards help the East Riding FA recognise those who go above and beyond to support the beautiful game in our county. Without you the game would not exist and we are indebted to your efforts in making sure that the East Riding is the best place for people to play and enjoy football.
