Tribute Game

£740 raised for Cancer Research UK

Referee From Across East Riding To Stage Charity Football Game

Referees from across East Riding united last month to play an 11-a-side football game at the East Riding FA Roy West Centre.

The friendly game which was being staged in memory of former referee Simon Leaning who sadly passed away in January 2022 was also being played to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Over 40 referees from across East Riding were split into two teams with the sides being managed by current East Riding FA Referee Development Officer Mark Brown and former East Riding FA Referee Development Officer Steve Lazenby

In a unique twist the match was officiated by one family with Ian Mclane, Jayne Cameron Mclane and Bobbi Lea Cameron Mclane who were close friends of Simon Leaning taking control of the fixture.

All participants donated at least £10 to play in the game with a number of non playing match officials also generously donating making the final total raised an amazing £740.

This money will now be donated to Cancer Research UK who are our official charity partner for season 2023 / 24.

East Riding FA CEO Adam Lowthorpe said, “We are delighted to be supporting Cancer Research UK this season and this game was a fitting tribute to a well respected local match official. Our thanks go to everyone who helped organise the game and in particular the people who donated so generously. After the success of this fixture we are now hoping to make this an annual event."
