Young Leaders Take Part in Evening of Coaching

3:24 PM, Thursday, 04 March 10.

On Thursday 25th February 16 volunteers from the Step into Sport Programme took part in an in-service evening that focused on coach development.

Following the feedback from the last in-service evening held in October 2009 it was decided that the evening would have a much more practical emphasis and so the young leaders were given the opportunity to develop their coaching skills with the help and guidance of Paul Kay, Community Football Coach at the East Riding County FA.

The first half an hour was spent inside whilst each of the four small groups designed and planned a coaching session to deliver outside to the rest of the group. Paul's aim was to provide the young volunteers with ideas and examples of how to develop each coaching session to meet the needs of the group. Some sessions were made progressively difficult to challenge the players whereas during other sessions the young leaders looked at how they would simplify sessions in the event that players were struggling.

The evening was rounded off by a coaching demonstration from Paul himself in which the players were encouraged to contribute their ideas of how to develop various aspects.

The Step into Sport volunteers will meet again in June to receive the rewards they have earned for the hours they have completed throughout the year.
