On Saturday 20th February the East Riding Girl’s Football League launched the first ever Girl’s Under 8’s league in the County.
Over 20 girls from both Hessle Town Women’s and Girl’s AFC and North Ferriby United arrived at Dunswell Community Centre to play 5-a-side games against each other throughout the afternoon. Despite the unfavourable weather forecast for the weekend the afternoon remained dry and bright but sadly the sunshine wasn’t enough to improve a rather wet pitch. Unfazed, the girl’s threw themselves into every game, some of them quite literally picking themselves up from the puddles splattered in mud! The day was a huge success, not once did the girl’s stop smiling. The fixtures are a welcome arrival for young female players that have been training at clubs for some time and I was told that they took some getting to sleep the night before because of their excitement!
The league is currently piloting over the following dates with a view to expanding for the 2010/11 season:
