Beach Soccer Tournament

1:12 PM, Thursday, 07 August 08.

On Sunday 3rd August Bridlington hosted the second annual women’s beach soccer tournament and was again a huge success.

Despite sore feet and a few bruises everyone involved had a brilliant day. Apart from the few odd spots of rain the weather was fantastic and the atmosphere between players and referees could not be faltered.

The tournament consisted of six teams from across North Yorkshire: Huntingdon Babes, Thirsk Ladies, Scarborough Ladies, Hessle Town, Hull University and South Cave with each team playing round robin fixtures followed by semi-finals and finals. After a tense 15 fixtures and several penalty shoot outs the semi-finalists were decided with Scarborough Ladies playing Thirsk Ladies and Hull University playing Hessle Town.

The final game saw Thirsk Ladies facing Hessle Town. Despite an early goal from Hessle Town, Thirsk refused to give in and it wasn’t long before they equalised. Due to the irregular nature of beach football both teams were forcing fantastic saves from the two goalkeepers but it was Hessle Town that emerged as overall winners with a final 2-1 result.

A massive thank you must be said to both Dave Grosse for organising the tournament and Jonathon Lowe for refereeing the games. The excitement is set to be repeated later in the month when the men’s and junior tournaments take place.
