Driffield Junior FC was formed in the summer of 2002 by 4 local league players, David Potter, Martin Burniston, Jim Laird & Pat Naylor, who thought it was time to put something back in to local football.
They could never understand how the town the size of Driffield didn’t have a junior set up and wanting to put something back in to the local community they decided to start a junior football club.
After some adverts in the local press a meeting was set up for people who were interested to come along and hear what they had to say about having a junior club in the town. The meeting was well attended by 40 parents and a few children and it was decided to start by running training sessions to gauge how many age groups they would have.
The first training session was a bit of a shock for the four coaches when just short of 100 boys & girls turned up, this left one to get all the details from the parents and the other three to take the session.
Things moved on quickly from there, with the age groups U8 to U10 forming to play friendly matches and some tournaments. The following year we started to enter teams in to the East Yorkshire League
and then on to the Hull Boys Sunday Football League.
It has always been the aim of the club to keep cost to the parents as cheap as possible to allow their children to join and at £50 for the season we feel this is a affordable amount as we can subsidies the cost through running a very successful tournament and 2 race nights a year.
We have also been fortunate to have received some good backing from sponsors over the years and have just made a sponsorship deal with Citroen Broach Hill garage for them to be our main sponsor for the next 3 years and the funds they are providing will help us keep the costs to the parents down.
We currently have one or Two teams in every age group through from U7 to U16 Boys and also coach 5-6 year old boys and girls just starting the “beautiful game” and U12 girls.
We also have a link with the local schools through a partnership with GOALSPORTS run by Mark Plumpton and this is invaluable asset in the recruitment of youngsters to the club
Another aim of the club was to have a link from junior football to the adult game and this year we have been able to do this for the first time. Driffield FC reformed last season as part of our club and this year we should have 2 teams in the Driffield League, with some players from last years U16 following on to the adult teams.
